DUMBO, or Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, sits between the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges on the Brooklyn side of the East River. For many decades it was a manufacturing district, housing warehouses and factories that made machinery, paper boxes and Brillo soap pads. In the 1970s it evolved into an artists community with large and inexpensive loft apartment spaces for studios and homes. Over time it has become increasingly gentrified with upscale loft apartments, art galleries and boutiques. In 2007 DUMBO became a historic district.
